How to Get Your Energy Back

My Healthy Balance

The 10 Things I Started Eating That Gave Me My Energy Back (even at 5 1/2 months pregnant)

It’s hard to believe I feel better now at 5 1/2 months pregnant than I did before I was pregnant. Once I found out I was pregnant, I really started paying more attention to what I was eating. I wanted to make sure I was giving my little peanut all the nutrients he needed without feeling like I didn’t have enough of my own.

So I decided to switch from snacking on what I was craving (chips and cookies) to something a little healthier….with an occasional cheat day of a couple cookies once or twice a month.😁 At first, it sucked. Not gonna lie.

Then something happened, I actually started craving my healthier snacks over my junk food snacks! I’m guessing it’s cause my body got used to eating better and had a chance to detox from all the junk I was giving it. Anyway, here’s what I started eating that completely changed my energy levels:

10. Bananas

We always have bananas in our house cause our kids devour them on a daily basis. I used to never have any cause I didn’t want to be eating the kid’s snacks. One morning I woke up starving and didn’t want to wait until I made breakfast, so I had a banana.

First of all, yum! I had forgotten how much I loved bananas! So I decided to start every morning off with a banana and that was the first time I noticed a change in my energy. So yes, I will continue to start every morning with a banana.

9. Hard-Boiled Eggs

I love these and can totally eat way more than I should if I’m not careful lol. My usual breakfast includes sunny side up eggs and toast, so I have to watch how many of these I actually eat per day. So I started keeping a bowl of hard-boiled eggs in the fridge and I snack on one each day.

8. Hummus and Carrots

O.M.G. would you believe me if I told you I had never even tasted hummus until 2016? Once I tried it, I was hooked! Now whenever I want something crunchy to snack on, instead of reaching for a bag of chips, I grab a plate of hummus and baby carrots. I honestly think I could go through a container of hummus faster than a bag of chips now.

7. Yogurt

I’ve always been super picky with my yogurt, I don’t like a lot of yogurts out there. I used to love Yoplait brand until I found out it was basically all sugar and not healthy for you at all. After trying many new brands that I couldn’t stomach enough to finish, I finally found one I loved and now, it’s all I eat.

I was at Whole Foods one day and they were handing out samples of Stonyfield Greek and Chía yogurt. I decided to try it and ended up finishing my husband’s as well. Right away, I then headed straight for where they were and bought enough to last us all week. Since then, it’s the only kind of yogurt I eat on the regular.

6. Oatmeal

I know it’s a breakfast food but I love eating oatmeal any time of the day. Especially right now where it’s Winter in Oklahoma and it’s just the perfect oatmeal all day everyday weather 🙂 I’ve never tried making my own oatmeal in the crock pot but I’m on the lookout for some good recipes. Leave a comment below with the link to any good ones you may have!

5. Almonds

This is another snack food I could eat entirely too much of. If I bring the container with me to my desk while I’m working on a blog post, I will literally finish the entire thing. So I make it a point now to just take a handful on a napkin with me and I have a handful every day. Sometimes if I’m at Whole Foods and I accidentally pass by the candy section, I’ll bring some chocolate covered almonds home with me.

When my husband asks why I don’t share these I say, “because I’m pregnant”. Then he goes, ok. You win. 🙂

4. Apples

I have an apple every.single.day. This is one of the foods I just crave all the time now. Ideally, I like to have a fruit bowl of apples, oranges, pineapple, strawberries, and grapes. If I don’t have all these on hand at the same time, I always at the very least have apples in my home.

3. Popcorn

I am so glad that my husband hates the taste of Whole Food’s 365 White Cheddar Popcorn because I love it! My husband has no interest in changing his eating habits and thinks that everything, except the meat from Whole Foods, tastes like cardboard. 🙄 I on the other hand, absolutely love that I get these bags of popcorn all to myself 🙂

2. Banana-Nut Muffins

I used to grab one of these if I was running late and didn’t have time to make breakfast, but these have become a favorite anytime snack food of mine. My kids absolutely love these as well, my husband, not so much….go figure!

1. Water

Ok so the number one thing I have done that has made the most impact in my energy is that I started drinking waaaaay more water. I mean, waaaaaaaaaay more water! I came across an article one day about the gallon of water a day challenge and my husband commented about how that would kill you.

Intrigued by these stories, I decided to ask my doctor about it and if it was true that it would kill me? He said if I were to drink a gallon of water in under two hours then yes, that could potentially be deadly. However, if I were to spread my gallon of water throughout the day, that not only would it not be harmful, but it would actually be good for me.

Now there’s a reason why I was never any good at drinking water, it had no taste to it! So I started making lemon water to keep in the fridge and that’s what worked for me. I love lemons, so adding lemon juice to my water made me want to drink it all day long.

There are so many recipes for flavored water out there. For me, lemon water is what keeps me coming back for more all throughout the day. I know that the amount of water I drink now compared to what I used to drink, is what has made me feel as amazing as I do today.

So there you have it, the top 10 things I eat/drink throughout the day that give me an immense amount of energy and make me feel ready to take on each and every day!
